In 2016, Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital in Barcelona opened its new main hall: an emblematic space, which serves as the principal entrance into the hospital and the central hub connecting with the other hospital buildings.
In the new space, an interactive environmental concept focuses on the human body. Five installations have been designed, each one representing a system or an organ in the human body. Using a very simple code of pictograms and requiring active participation from kids, the installations symbolically interpret the functions of the human body in an informal and approachable way. This project aims at creating an enjoyable space and engaging the children in play, in a place that is typically associated with discomfort and pain.
